In November 2016, Penguin UK will publish a full-cast audio version of Neil Gaiman’s short story How the Marquis Got His Coat Back, a side story related to Gaiman’s Neverwhere novel that was adapted by Dirk Maggs for radio drama in 2014. Maggs is back in this new project. It will also be broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It will be about 45-minutes long and star (as conjecture by a photo of the cast and crew) Paterson Joseph, Bernard Cribbins, Adrian Lester, and Don Warrington, among others. Radio Times reports there is at least one more actor that has not been photographed, causing Gaiman fans to speculate: Cumberbatch? Capaldi?
Although the casting list hasn’t been released, we can only hope that Paterson Joseph is reprising his role as the Marquis, as he played that character excellently in the TV adaptation twenty years ago. I did an interview with Joseph a few years ago where he talks about how it was a dream role he was hoping to play it again someday and, ironically, he talked about how the Marquis coat from the TV show went missing. Maybe Paterson Joseph will never get that coat back, but we’re all waiting to listen to How the Marquis Got His Coat Back.
