Johnny Flynn is not only a British actor but also a well-known musician. He is the frontman for Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit. He also wrote the theme song to Detectorists. As an actor, he’s often credited as Joe Flynn. In the forthcoming TV series Genius, he will play young Albert Einstein.
Dylan – Scrotal Recall (2014 – present)
In Scrotal Recall, Johnny Flynn plays Dylan, who has just been diagnosed with chlamydia and must now track down every girl he’s had a relationship with to let them know the bad news. Dylan is a romantic, but not a very successful one, all the more at obstacle now that he has an STD. After a successful first season, Netflix bought the series so that they could make a season two. They rebranded the show as Lovesick, presumably because Scrotal Recall is the wrong tone for a love story, no matter how perfect a pun it may be.
James Forester – Song One (2014)
In Song One, Franny (Anne Hathaway) returns home after her brother is put into a coma by an accident. She reads his journal and visits the places he’s been, and she meets the musician that her brother is obsessed with, James Forester. And the love story begins.
Johnny Flynn currently has four albums out: A Larum, Been Listening, A Film Score of a Bag of Hammers, and Country Mile, plus a live recording in Washington DC. I was lucky enough to see him perform in Brooklyn in Sept. 23, 2013. Here’s a video of one of my favorite songs, “Tickle me Pink.” The keyboard player is his sister.
Johnny Piper – Detectorists (2014)
In addition to doing his own music, Johnny Flynn also wrote and performed the theme song to the comedy Detectorists, starring MacKenzie Crook and Toby Jones. Flynn even appears as a cameo in one episode, playing his song, as a character called Johnny Piper at an open mic night.

Toby – Brotherhood (2015)
After their mother unexpectedly dies, Toby and his brother Dan, both in their mid-twenties, are left to raise their 13-year-old brother Jamie, who went mute after the passing of his mother. Flynn plays a character not dissimilar to his other characters, a sappy romantic but a bit disheveled and carefree compared to Dan.
