Faces of Doctor Who Christmas Present

Obviously the big news of the season 10 Christmas special of Doctor Who is the return of Alex Kingston as River Song, but let’s take a look at the other guest stars in this episode.

Matt Lucas

mattlucasYou remember Nardole from the Christmas special, right? River Song’s sidekick who gets tossed aside and uploaded to Hydroflax’s mainframe? Actor Matt Lucas’s double act partner David Walliams appeared in the episode “The God Complex” in 2011, so it’s about time that Matt Lucas gets a role in Doctor Who! Lucas will look familiar to American audiences from movies/shows like Alice in Wonderland, Portlandia,  and  even  BridesmaidsIn the U.K., he’s most famous for his work with Walliams in founding sketch show Little Britain and follow up projects like Come Fly with MeLook for Matt Lucas later this year in the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s How to Talk to Girls at Partiesthe sequel to Alice in Wonderlandand as Bottom in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Greg Davies

Boy, Doctor Who sure loves to shove as many comedians into their Christmas specials as possible, don’t they? I remember Bill Bailey, Claire Skinner, and Alexander Armstrong all appearing one year. Anyway, Greg Davies, who plays the head of Hydroflax (or perhaps one of many heads of Hydroflax), is known for his standup comedy, but also on TV in The Inbetweenersappearances on many panel shows like Mock the Weekand most recently the TV show Man Down

Phillip Rhys

Okay, finally a drama actor. Phillip Rhys, who plays River Song’s unlucky lover Ramone, starred in the British sci-fi drama Survivors in 2008-2010. Living part-time in L.A., he appears in numerous American dramas, such as 24, Nip/Tuck, Warehouse 13and umm that TV movie any woman exactly my age would have seen a thousand times rerun on the Disney Channel Zenon: Girl of the 21st CenturyActually one of the first things I saw him in was a bad horror film called The Fear.
