If You Like Red Dwarf,

If you like the sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, which has been making episodes on and off since the late 80s, you may also like some of these things:

nickfrost2Hyperdrive is the 2006-2007 sci-fi sitcom starring Nick Frost, Miranda Hart, Dan Antopolski, and Kevin Eldon (who actually turned up in season 11 of Red Dwarf!). Besides the mash-up genre, the show shares its lowbrow joke style with Red Dwarf. The first episode has a lot of talk of testicles and oozing aliens. But if you can suffer through season 1, season 2 is actually really terrific. Both seasons are available on Amazon Instant.

Outside the Box

normanlovettIf you’re a fan of male Holly’s deadpan delivery, you’ll like the standup of Norman Lovett (who plays Holly on the show). His standup show Outside the Box is available on region-free DVD and as a download from GoFasterStripe.com. Norman Lovett turns out not only to be a slow talking deadpan comic but also a prop comic, one who’s found things in the green room and has brought them on stage to share with the audience and, frequently, put on his head.

Random Abstract Memory

hattiehayridgeIf you’re a fan of female Holly’s dry humor, you’ll like Hattie Hayridge’s audiobook (and also a paper book) Random Abstract Memory, which is available on Audible.com. It’s only an hour long, but it includes funny personal anecdotes about how her mother didn’t know she was pregnant until Hattie was actually born as well as behind-the-scenes stories of Red Dwarf.

It gives you a really good portrait of each cast and crew member, as well as funny and dangerous anecdotes from the set. It even includes behind the scenes info on the failed American remakes.

Red Dwarf Podcasts

dannyjohnjulesThere are a couple of fan podcasts for Red Dwarf if you still can’t get enough. There’s Smegheads, which is current with the new season 11  episodes. There are also so far 81 episodes of DwarfCasts, which is also current with season 11. Channel Dave had an official Red Dwarf podcast during the making of season 10, but it seems to be taken down now. These episodes included Robert Llewellyn talking about soggy rubber lips, having to get in earlier than the other actors, and being thinner now than when he had to fit into his costume in previous years. It also featured Danny John-Jules talkin gabout his first audition, the American accent he gives Cat, and Dwayne Dibbly. Get in touch if you know where these episodes now reside (anglonerd@gmail.com).
