The Ones Below (2015) is a thriller film starring Clemence Poesy, Laura Birn, Stephen Campbell Moore, and David Morrissey. It is currently available on Netflix.
It is a funny coincidence when the neighbors living downstairs from Kate and Justin in their middle class British duplex turn out to also be expecting their first child. Kate and the downstairs Theresa instantly bond over their pregnancies. But, one fateful night, Theresa and her uptight husband Jon are invited upstairs for dinner. A series of accidents leads to Theresa losing the fetus, and all the blame is put on Kate and Justin.
After a few harsh words, Theresa and Jon take the mature route out: they move away. In the meantime, the flat remains empty. Kate and Justin have their baby, Billy. But one day, Theresa and Jon mysteriously reappear in the flat downstairs. What do they want? Is their unwarranted kindness genuine or a mask for something else? The more suspicious Kate becomes of her neighbors, the more her husband loses faith in her sanity. She has a family history of mental illness, after all. Kate feels more and more alone, more and more paranoid, until we the viewers are not even sure anymore what is real.
I learned about The Ones Below while researching movies shot in Islington for BritMovieTours’ blog. It’s a typical thriller, but it’s very good and very scary. The moral of the story: don’t have neighbors!
